UNESCO-listed since 1978, Gorée Island was for several centuries a transit point of the transatlantic slave trade. The House of Slaves, with its famous 'Door of No Return' opening directly onto the ocean, remains today a place of reflection visited by heads of state and travellers from around the world — an essential act of remembrance for understanding the history of a whole part of the world.
Lake Retba's pink hue comes from a microscopic algae, Dunaliella salina, which produces a red pigment to protect itself from salinity levels close to those of the Dead Sea. The colour's intensity varies with the season and time of day, reaching its peak under the midday sun in the dry season — a phenomenon so rare it is found in only a handful of lakes worldwide.
