Inland, the Ghriba synagogue, whose origins reportedly date back over two thousand years, hosts an annual pilgrimage that brings together Tunisian Jews from around the world.
The village of Guellala, known for its clay pottery fired in traditional kilns dug into the ground, keeps alive a centuries-old craft visible in the many workshops open to visitors. The island's fortified mosques, such as the one in Guellala, showcase a unique Berber architecture, designed to withstand both invasions and the heat.
