A journey between Tunis, its Carthaginian remnants and the blue-and-white village of Sidi Bou Said, and Douz, the gateway to the Sahara, where the desert literally begins at the edge of town.
Founded by the Phoenicians then razed by Rome before being rebuilt, Carthage today retains only scattered fragments of its ancient splendour — the Antonine Baths, Punic ports, Roman villas. A few kilometres away, Sidi Bou Said offers a total contrast: a village painted entirely blue and white since a 20th-century decree, its cobbled lanes and bougainvillea making it one of the most photographed villages in North Africa.
Nicknamed 'the gateway to the Sahara', Douz marks the boundary between the oases of southern Tunisia and the vastness of the Grand Erg Oriental. The camel trek, guided by nomads whose families have practised this trade for generations, reaches dunes where the silence is almost total — an experience many travellers describe as the most memorable of their trip, well ahead of the ancient sites up north.
