A journey between La Paz, the administrative capital perched over three thousand six hundred metres up, and the Uyuni salt flats, over ten thousand square kilometres of salt that turn into an infinite mirror after the rain.
The remnant of a prehistoric lake that dried up tens of thousands of years ago, the Uyuni salt flats stretch over ten thousand square kilometres, making them the largest salt desert in the world. When a thin layer of rainwater covers its perfectly flat surface, the salt turns into a giant mirror that reflects the sky to infinity, erasing any horizon line — a phenomenon that draws photographers from around the world between December and April.
Between the salt flats and the coloured lagoons, the road crosses one of the highest inhabited Andean plateaus in the world, where active geysers, Andean flamingos and wind-sculpted rock formations create an almost Martian landscape. The Colored Lagoon, its red hue coming from microscopic algae and mineral sediment, is home to three species of flamingo, including the rare James's flamingo, observable nowhere else with such ease.
