A journey between Panama City, its futuristic skyline overlooking the canal that changed world trade, and the San Blas Islands, an archipelago of over three hundred and sixty islands governed by the Indigenous Guna people.
Completed in 1914 after decades of effort, the Panama Canal cut months off the sea route between the US east and west coasts, avoiding the need to round Cape Horn. At the Miraflores Locks, a visitor centre lets you watch live as giant container ships rise or descend several metres in just a few minutes, thanks to a gravity-fed lock system that has remained functional more than a century after its construction.
Unlike most Caribbean archipelagos open to mass tourism, the San Blas Islands remain fully self-governed by the Guna people, who control access and development according to their own rules under an agreement reached with the Panamanian state in 1925. This unique governance has preserved a traditional way of life and pristine coral reefs, away from the large hotel complexes that have transformed other Caribbean destinations.
