A journey in two movements: Santiago and the vineyards of the Colchagua Valley, framed by the Andes, then the lunar landscapes of the Atacama Desert — geysers at dawn, a flamingo-pink salt flat, and nights under one of the clearest skies on earth.
The trip begins in the lively Lastarria district, steps from Bellavista and Cerro San Cristóbal, whose funicular gives the first real overview of the city, ringed by the snow-capped Andes. The route then heads to the Colchagua Valley, one of the country's great wine regions, where two estates are visited on horseback before a tasting of carménère, Chile's signature grape, and a lunch served among the vines.
The scenery changes completely on arrival in San Pedro de Atacama, an adobe village set at 2,400 metres on the edge of the world's driest desert. Valle de la Luna and its salt dunes are best seen at sunset, when the low light turns the rock red. The next day starts before dawn, to watch the El Tatio geysers steam in the cold, before descending via the Atacama salt flat and its flamingo lagoons. The final days, without much of a plan, are spent floating in warm waters and looking up at one of the clearest skies on the planet.
