A journey in two movements: Cartagena, a colonial city of pastel facades ringed by ramparts, then the Zona Cafetera, a mountainous region where Colombian coffee grows in the shade of wax palms.
The trip begins within the walls, in the old town's lanes where every balcony seems to compete in colour with the next. Getsemaní, once a working-class district now an open-air art gallery, and Castillo San Felipe, a fortress that repelled several English sieges, round out the visit before a day by boat to the Rosario Islands, where the coral reef is explored by snorkel facing deserted beaches.
The scenery changes completely climbing into the Zona Cafetera — green hills, morning mist and plantations where Colombian coffee still grows using traditional methods. The Cocora Valley, with wax palms sometimes topping sixty metres, remains one of the country's most recognisable landscapes. Salento, a village of colourful balconies, closes the trip with a horseback ride through the surrounding countryside.
