Former capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala until a devastating earthquake in 1773, Antigua has kept its 16th-century Spanish urban plan intact, UNESCO-listed. Its pastel façades, ruined convents overgrown with bougainvillea, and the imposing Agua volcano looming above make it one of Central America's best-preserved colonial towns.
Central America's most studied Maya city, Tikal is thought to have housed up to a hundred thousand people at its height, between 200 and 900 AD. Its pyramid-temples, some rising more than seventy metres, still emerge today from the Petén canopy, where howler monkeys and toucans can be heard well before the first temple comes into view.
