A journey that takes its time with altitude: Cusco, the old Inca imperial capital, the Sacred Valley and its mountain markets, then arriving by train at Machu Picchu, seen at first light before the crowds.
The trip begins with a deliberately quiet day in Cusco, giving the body time to adjust to the altitude. The following days follow the rhythm of the old Inca capital: the baroque cathedral built on a palace's foundations, the Qorikancha sun temple, then the Sacsayhuamán fortress and its stone blocks fitted together without mortar. The road into the Sacred Valley stops at the Pisac market, between textile stalls and still-cultivated terraces, before Ollantaytambo, one of the few sites never taken by the conquistadors.
The panoramic train along the Urubamba river leads to Aguas Calientes, the last stop before Machu Picchu. Leaving before dawn means being among the first through the gates, while mist still lifts off the terraces and llamas graze quietly among the ruins. The return follows the same train line, back to Cusco and the San Blas artisan quarter, where cobbled lanes and textile workshops close the trip on a slower note.
