Every morning before dawn, hundreds of saffron-robed monks silently leave Luang Prabang's many monasteries to receive food alms from residents kneeling along the streets. This Buddhist ritual, one of the best-preserved in South East Asia, is not a show staged for visitors but an authentic daily practice — which is why witnessing it respectfully, in silence and at a distance, matters.
The only landlocked country in South East Asia, Laos lives to the rhythm of the Mekong, which crosses the entire territory from north to south. The slow-boat trip to the Pak Ou Caves, where generations of pilgrims have left thousands of Buddha statues over the centuries, offers a glimpse of a river still largely spared the mass tourist traffic that characterises its neighbours.
