A journey centred on Angkor, the largest religious city ever built, but one that also takes time for Tonlé Sap Lake and its floating villages — far from a quick dash between two temples.
Sunrise over Angkor Wat's five towers remains one of the country's most anticipated moments, but it's the whole site — over a thousand temples spread across four hundred square kilometres — that impresses most once you take the time to get lost in it. Ta Prohm, deliberately left to the roots of giant banyan trees, and Banteay Srei, with its rare-finesse pink sandstone carvings, round out a picture often reduced to the main temple alone.
Half an hour from Angkor, Tonlé Sap Lake changes the register completely — an entire village, houses, school and temple included, built on stilts or floating directly on the water depending on the season. The visit closes at a slower pace: cycling through the countryside, a stop in a rural village, and a Khmer cooking class that ends the trip on a convivial note.
