Having grown in a few decades from a simple tin-mining outpost founded at the confluence of two rivers into one of Asia's most recognisable skylines, Kuala Lumpur is crowned by the Petronas Towers, long the tallest twin towers in the world. The observation bridge connecting the two towers on the forty-first floor offers a breathtaking view over a city where mosques, Hindu temples and glass skyscrapers sit side by side with no apparent hierarchy.
Discovered in 1885 by a British surveyor seeking a climatic refuge from the tropical heat, the Cameron Highlands became by the 1920s the country's most important tea-producing centre. The terraced plantations, hugging the rolling terrain as far as the eye can see, can still be visited today at family-run tea houses, where hand-picking is practised exactly as it was a century ago.
