Jeju, South Korea's largest island formed by volcanic activity dating back two million years, concentrates within a single territory craters, lava tubes, and a coast of black cliffs listed as UNESCO World Heritage. Mount Hallasan, the country's highest peak rising over nineteen hundred metres at the island's centre, and the famous haenyeo, traditional free-diving women who have harvested seafood for generations, forge the singular identity of this island long considered Korea's Hawaii.
Mount Hallasan, an extinct shield volcano rising over nineteen hundred metres at the island's centre, remains South Korea's highest point and the heart of a UNESCO-listed national park sheltering over seventeen hundred plant species. The Manjanggul lava tubes, formed about two hundred thousand years ago by volcanic flows, rank among the longest and best-preserved in the world, with nearly a kilometre open to visitors.
The haenyeo, literally "women of the sea," have free-dived for generations to harvest abalone, sea urchins, and seaweed from Jeju's rocky seabeds, with no oxygen tank, a practice added to UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list in 2016. Once numbering several tens of thousands, they are now only about four thousand, mostly over sixty years old, and carry on a singular matriarchal system that traditionally placed women at the centre of the island's family economy.
