A journey between Seoul, between restored royal palaces and ultramodern districts, and Gyeongju, the ancient capital of the Silla kingdom, whose hills still conceal millennia-old royal tombs.
Destroyed and rebuilt multiple times through invasions and Japanese occupation, the five royal palaces of the Joseon dynasty have undergone extensive restoration since the 1990s. Gyeongbokgung, the largest of them, still hosts the changing of the guard in traditional dress today, a ritual reintroduced to preserve the memory of a centuries-old ceremony at the heart of a capital that has otherwise become one of the most technologically advanced in the world.
Capital of the Silla kingdom for nearly a millennium, Gyeongju holds such an exceptional density of archaeological sites that it is often nicknamed 'the museum without walls'. The tumuli of Daereungwon Park, artificial hills concealing the tombs of kings and queens, sit alongside Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto, two masterpieces of Buddhist art jointly UNESCO-listed — a heritage that has crossed the centuries with remarkable continuity.
