Chiang Mai, capital of the Lanna kingdom founded in 1296 and independent from Siam for centuries, concentrates over three hundred Buddhist temples in and around its historic ramparts. The city also serves as the gateway to the Golden Triangle, a mountainous region on the border of Laos and Myanmar where hill tribes with distinct traditions live, and where the Mekong marks the border between three countries.

The three hundred temples of Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai concentrates over three hundred Buddhist temples in and around its square moated old town, a legacy of seven centuries of history as the capital of the Lanna kingdom. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, perched on a hill overlooking the city and reached by a staircase of over three hundred steps guarded by naga serpents, remains the region's most venerated sanctuary and an active pilgrimage site since the 14th century.

The Golden Triangle and the hill tribes

The Golden Triangle, a mountainous region where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet along the Mekong, owes its name to its past as the world's leading opium-producing zone, now largely replaced by tourism and crop substitution. The region remains home to hill tribes such as the Akha, Karen, and Hmong, whose villages carry on traditional dress and textile crafts distinct from lowland Thai culture.
