Taveuni, Fiji's third-largest island, owes its "garden island" nickname to rainfall among the highest in the South Pacific, which nourishes exceptionally dense tropical vegetation and a succession of waterfalls tumbling down its steep volcanic terrain. Crossed through its centre by the 180th meridian, the island also offers the rare possibility of standing simultaneously in the eastern and western hemispheres, one day and the next at once.
Bouma National Park, covering nearly half of Taveuni's surface area, protects three successive waterfalls reached by a hiking trail through a primary rainforest of rare density. The tallest of the three, fed by rainfall that can exceed six thousand millimetres a year on the island's heights, tumbles into a natural pool open for swimming year-round, surrounded by vegetation that earned Taveuni its garden island nickname.
Taveuni's waters are renowned among divers for the Great White Wall reef, a coral wall covered in anemones and dazzling white soft corals that plunges vertically into the Somosomo Strait, a current particularly rich in nutrients between Taveuni and the neighbouring island of Vanua Levu. This site, considered one of the best dive spots in the entire South Pacific, owes its spectacular biodiversity to the meeting of ocean currents that continuously feed its coral formations.
