The Loyalty Islands, a coral archipelago east of Grande Terre made up mainly of Lifou, Maré, and Ouvéa, stand out for their nature as uplifted atolls with no rivers, whose waters rank among the clearest in the entire South Pacific. Unlike the rest of New Caledonia, these islands remain administered under Kanak customary law, where access to certain lands and beaches remains subject to the authorisation of tribal chiefs.
The Loyalty Islands differ geologically from the rest of New Caledonia in their nature as coral atolls uplifted by tectonic movements, a terrain that deprives them of rivers and thus any sediment input that might cloud their coastal waters. This total absence of sedimentation, combined with exceptionally preserved fringing reefs, offers underwater clarity that ranks among the best in the South Pacific, appreciated for both diving and simple observation from the surface.
The Loyalty Islands remain governed by a particular customary status within New Caledonia, where land belongs collectively to Kanak clans and access to certain beaches or natural sites requires the prior agreement of the relevant tribal chief, generally obtained through a local guide. This social organisation, based on a system of gifts and counter-gifts called custom, still structures most of the islands' social and ceremonial life today.
