Its name literally meaning 'big hole' in Samoan, To Sua is a collapsed volcanic pool thirty metres deep, its turquoise waters linked to the ocean by a network of underground tunnels that make its level rise and fall with the tides. A wooden ladder, the only way in, descends along walls covered in tropical vegetation down to the water, at one of the South Pacific's most photographed swimming spots.
Without walls, supported only by wooden posts and covered with a thatch or tin roof, the Samoan fale remains the archipelago's traditional dwelling, designed to let sea breezes circulate in a humid tropical climate. Sleeping in a beach fale, woven-fibre blinds lowered for the night, remains one of the most authentic ways to experience the communal way of life still central to Samoan culture.
