Savai'i, Samoa's largest island and one of the largest in all of Polynesia, remains largely rural and less developed than neighbouring Upolu, making it the place where fa'a Samoa traditions, the "Samoan way," are carried on with the most authenticity. Considered by local mythology as the original cradle of the Polynesian people, the island still bears the scars of early 20th-century volcanic eruptions, its black lava fields and lava tube caves standing as testimony today.
The successive eruptions of Mount Matavanu between 1905 and 1911 buried several villages in northern Savai'i under black lava flows, whose petrified remains are still visible today at Saleaula, notably the ruins of a church whose stone walls alone withstood the heat. This lunar landscape of black volcanic rock, radically contrasting with the surrounding tropical vegetation, stretches over several kilometres and bears witness to the destructive power of one of the most significant geological events in recent Samoan history.
Samoan mythology places at Savai'i the site of the world's creation and the starting point of the migrations that populated the entire Polynesian triangle, from Hawaii to Easter Island via New Zealand, an oral tradition that gives the island a unique spiritual status in the region. This identity as an ancestral cradle is reflected in the vitality of fa'a Samoa, a communal way of life structured around matai, extended-family chiefs, and traditional ceremonies that remain fully integrated into the daily life of the island's rural villages.
