Georgia claims eight thousand years of uninterrupted winemaking tradition, the oldest known in the world, inscribed on UNESCO's intangible heritage list. Wine ferments there in qvevri, huge terracotta vessels buried up to the neck, a method the Kakheti region still practises alongside more modern ones, offering visitors a rare, mineral taste found nowhere else.
Perched on a promontory facing Mount Kazbek, one of the Caucasus' highest peaks, Gergeti Trinity Church dates to the 14th century and remains one of the country's most photographed sites. The Georgian Military Highway leading up to it, opened in the 19th century, cuts through dramatic gorges and shepherd villages, offering a striking glimpse of the mountainous border between Europe and Asia.
