Founded in 1566 by the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem after Malta's victorious siege against the Ottoman Empire, Valletta packs into under a square kilometre one of the world's densest concentrations of baroque heritage, entirely UNESCO-listed. St John's Co-Cathedral, austere outside but dazzlingly rich within, houses one of Caravaggio's few signed works, The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist.
More rural and greener than the main island, Gozo is best explored at the pace of its villages, dominated by Victoria's Citadel and the Ġgantija temples, predating Stonehenge by more than a thousand years. Between the two islands, tiny, nearly uninhabited Comino hides the Blue Lagoon, one of the Mediterranean's most photographed swimming spots, best visited early morning before the day-trip boats arrive.
