A safari that takes a rare form: the Okavango Delta, a maze of clear-water channels at the heart of the Kalahari Desert, explored both by 4x4 and by mokoro, the traditional local canoe.
The Okavango Delta remains one of the few deltas in the world that never reaches the sea, instead spreading into the sands of the Kalahari to form a maze of channels, islets and lagoons. Reachable only by air or water, the remote camp where the trip stays allows for a rare kind of immersion, far from the tracks frequented by 4x4s in more conventional parks.
The mokoro, a traditional canoe punted by a local poler, allows an approach to wildlife impossible by 4x4 — complete silence, an almost imperceptible glide between the water lilies, and encounters with hippos or water birds at water level itself. The Moremi Game Reserve, with one of the highest wildlife densities in southern Africa, rounds out the experience with more conventional game drives in search of the big predators.
