A journey between Caye Caulker, a car-free island set on the world's second-largest barrier reef, and the Maya ruins of Xunantunich, still wrapped in the jungle of the Cayo district.
Made famous by Jacques Cousteau, who ranked it among the world's ten best dive sites, the Great Blue Hole is an almost perfectly circular karst marine sinkhole, formed during the last ice ages. Its inner walls, lined with stalactites dating from when the site was still a dry cave, are explored by diving from thirty metres down.
Less visited than the major sites of neighbouring Guatemala, the Maya city of Xunantunich is reached by a hand-cranked cable ferry, the only way across from the opposite bank of the Mopan River. Its main pyramid, El Castillo, remains Belize's second-tallest structure and offers a unique panorama over the Guatemalan border and the surrounding jungle.
