Boquete, a small mountain town nestled in the highlands of western Panama, owes its fame to its geisha coffee, regularly voted the world's best coffee at international competitions, grown on the fertile volcanic slopes around Volcán Barú, the country's highest point, from which the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea can both be glimpsed on a clear day.

The Geisha Coffee Trail

The coffee plantations surrounding Boquete, sitting between one thousand two hundred and one thousand eight hundred metres, benefit from a microclimate that has allowed geisha, a long-forgotten Ethiopian variety, to reveal its full aromatic potential. Visits to family fincas, from picking to roasting, end with a comparative tasting of several harvests, some of which sell among the highest prices in the world at auction.

Volcán Barú and the Boquete Valley

The night climb of Volcán Barú, the only point in Panama from which both oceans can be seen on a perfectly clear day, begins around midnight to reach the summit at sunrise. The surrounding valley, nicknamed "Panama's eternal garden" for its permanent spring-like climate, can also be explored by zipline through the canopy or with a swim in the whitewater rivers rushing down the volcanic slopes.
