The Bay of Kotor, often described as Europe's southernmost fjord though geologically it is a submerged river canyon, stretches nearly thirty kilometres between steep mountains that plunge directly into deep blue water. Kotor's fortified old town, UNESCO World Heritage listed, is protected by a four-and-a-half-kilometre defensive wall that climbs the mountainside to St John's Fortress, perched at two hundred and sixty metres altitude and reached after climbing more than thirteen hundred steps.
The Bay of Kotor, often presented as Europe's southernmost fjord though geologists technically classify it as a submerged river canyon rather than a true glacially formed fjord, stretches nearly thirty kilometres between mountains rising over seventeen hundred metres and plunging directly into deep blue water. This spectacular geographic configuration, combined with four historic fortified towns arranged along its shores, earned the bay its UNESCO World Heritage listing as early as 1979.
Kotor's fortified old town, whose origins trace back to Roman times though most of its current architecture dates from Venetian rule between the 14th and 18th centuries, remains protected by a four-and-a-half-kilometre defensive wall that winds up the mountainside to St John's Fortress, perched at two hundred and sixty metres altitude. The climb up the more than thirteen hundred steps leading to the fortress, though demanding, is rewarded with an exceptional panorama over the entire bay and its surrounding mountains, particularly spectacular at sunset.
