A journey between archaeology and desert: Petra, a Nabataean city carved into the rock over two thousand years ago, then Wadi Rum, whose red expanses have served as the backdrop for generations of adventure tales.
After Amman and the Roman ruins of Jerash, then a float in the Dead Sea's hypersaline waters, the trip reaches its high point at Petra. Walking through the Siq, a narrow gorge with vertiginous walls, to suddenly emerge facing the Treasury remains one of the most striking moments in the Middle East. The hike to the Monastery, larger and far less crowded, and the 'Petra by Night' evening round out the visit.
Wadi Rum closes the trip on an entirely different register — red rock formations sculpted by the wind, fine sand dunes and an almost total silence, barely disturbed by the jeep's engine. The night under canvas at a Bedouin camp, dinner cooked beneath the sand and a starry sky of rare clarity, closes the trip on one of its most memorable moments.
