A journey between Muscat, a capital with rigorously preserved white architecture, the turquoise water canyons of Wadi Shab and a night under canvas deep in the red sand dunes of Wahiba.
Unlike other Gulf capitals, Muscat imposed strict regulations back in the 1970s limiting building height and requiring white or pastel facades — no glass skyscrapers, just low lines that hug the surrounding mountainous terrain. This deliberate urban planning policy, combined with 16th-century Portuguese forts still standing on either side of the harbour, gives the city an architectural coherence rare in the region.
The Wahiba dunes, stretching roughly two hundred kilometres from north to south, remain home to Bedouin families, some still living a semi-nomadic life. Spending a night under canvas atop a sand ridge, far from any light pollution, reveals a starry sky of rare density — then, on waking, a sunrise that tints the dunes an almost unreal red before the heat sets in.
