Tel Aviv, founded in 1909 as the first modern Hebrew neighbourhood on the edge of the port city of Jaffa, has established itself over a century as Israel's cultural and party capital, the opposite of Jerusalem's contemplative atmosphere. The city claims the world's largest concentration of Bauhaus buildings, over four thousand, built by Jewish architects who emigrated from Germany in the 1930s, now UNESCO World Heritage listed.

The Bauhaus architecture of the White City

The district known as the "White City," UNESCO World Heritage listed in 2003, holds the world's largest concentration of Bauhaus-style buildings, mostly built by Jewish architects trained in Germany and who emigrated to Mandatory Palestine in the 1930s. Their clean facades, rounded balconies, and ribbon windows, adapted to the Mediterranean climate, are discovered along a walk through Rothschild and Bialik streets.

Jaffa and the urban beaches

Jaffa, an ancient port mentioned as early as the Bible and absorbed by Tel Aviv in 1950, retains a maze of cobbled lanes, a lively flea market, and a still-active fishing harbour from which a few boats set out each morning. The thirteen kilometres of urban beaches lining the city, reachable on foot from the centre, stay busy late into the evening with matkot players, a paddle sport that has become emblematic of the Israeli coastline.
